LORET - 2D Explainer Video for Education
Explainer video to raise awareness of the LORET program among teachers passionate about sustainability
In Manpaard’s latest shout-out to the planet, we give a voice to Stephanie, a teacher deeply concerned with sustainability issues. She shares her experience with LORET. Through workshops, they provide a way for teachers to bring locally relevant sustainability issues into their classrooms. Our task was to create a video to help raise awareness for this program. The result is a serene 2D animated explainer video filled with a feel-good type of illustration.
Because it's brought as a testimony, we made the illustrations as if the teacher could have drawn them herself as she was explaining. It results in a simple, refined style that is accessible for many cultures. Since its conception in 2004, LORET saw use in Asia, Africa, South-America and Europe.
Broad strokes, little detail and a limited color palette add up to a playful but explanatory style.
Another important aspect is the connection between the kids and their local community. We designed characters in a broad range of ages, but by giving the kids important tasks, they look like equals.
When looking for possible examples to visualise, we knew student engagement would be the top priority, as this is the main goal for the teachers we want to reach. We focused on cases where students are very hands-on, such was when collecting food scraps from the school kitchen to allotments that will eventually attract bees to create honey, or by collecting plastic trash from the river to turn into new, useful products.
