AMAL - Collage Animation Explainer

As Agency for Integration and Inclusion, Amal has supported non-dutch speaking newcomers for about 50 years now. Amal & their network of partners guide them through a personalised trajectory, to help them comfortably find their place in Gent, Belgium. We made an easy-to-understand 3 minute explainer video showing the different steps. The animation is made in collage style for easy legibility across cultures.

One of the earliest steps in this progress is explaining how the civic integration process works. We wanted the mood to be light and friendly, yet informative enough. Civic integration is an exhausting and complex process as is. So we wanted this link in the chain to come across as welcoming and friendly. Amal had just rebranded, and the new fresh look certainly fit these characteristics. It consisted of 2 contrasting fonts and an array of vectorial shapes, frameworks & bright colours - which style-wise made a good starting point for the collage animation.

We made an easy-to-understand 3 minute video showing the different steps, their requirements and how to get help. One of the challenges here was finding a visual language that many different cultures would understand & be appealed by. Hence the choice to work with mixed media or collage animation. It allowed us to use photographs rather than drawings. We could animate cut-out pictures for activities or concepts, so less explanation or hard words were necessary. In the design process, this would also grant the possibility to quickly replace certain elements. Some imagery could potentially work triggering to certain demographics.
